THE INFLUENCE OF DILUENT POLARITY ON EXTRACTION OF PLUTONIUM COMPLEXES TO ORGANIC MEDIA

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
The influence of the polarity of diluents on the extraction of plutonium(IV) complexes from nitric acid solution with tri-n-butylphosphate, di-n- butylphosphate, thenoyltrifluoroacetone, tetra-n-butylammoniumnitrate, and methylisobutylketone was examined. Diluents such as carbon tetrachloride, chloroform. benzene, cyclohexane, n-heptane. bromoform, and dibromoethane were used singly and in mixtures. Evidence is presented for the importance of the dipole moment of the diluent in the extraction process in connection both with the structure of the organic phase and dipole-dipole interaction promoting solvation of the Pucomplex. Maxima exist in the extraction of Pu-TBAN complexes to phases containing mixtures of polar dlluents with non-polar diluents and in particular with benzene. (auth)
