THE FABRICATION OF THE FUEL ELEMENTS FOR THE UO$sub 2$ HIGH BURN-UP PROGRAM

The fuel rods for the 36 rod assemblies were fabricated by three methods: loose vibratory packing of the UO/sub 2/; loose vibratory packing followed by swaging of the UO/sub 2/; and pelletizing followed by sintering of the UO/sub 2/. The fuel component is clad with type 304 stainless steel with 1/4- inch O.D. and about a 28 mil wall. Total length of the fuel rods is 36 1/4 inches. (W.L.H.)
