THE DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF THE UO$sub 2$ FUEL ELEMENT SYSTEM. Quarterly Report for September 1, 1960-November 30, 1960

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4058465
Work was continued on the vibratory compaction of UO/sub 2/ and dereities as high as 94.1% of theorctical were attained. Several rods, containing vibratory compacted UO/sub 2/, compacted to above 90% of theoretical density, were subjected to small cross-sectional reductiona via swaging in an at tempt to increase the fuel density. Methods of testing UO/sub 2/ fuel rods were investigated. A cost estimate was performed with the object of determining the difference in fuel cycle costs between pelletized, vibratory compacted, swaged, and Rock-Rited fuel rods. (W.L.H.)
