URANIUM SURFACE CONTAMINATION ON NUCLEAR REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4182341
Surface U/sup 235/ contamination on nuclear reactor fuel elements is considered. The nature of the contamination and the resultant hazards from plant contamination in the event of a primary system leak are discussed. Methods for detecting and measuring surface contamination are described such as alpha counting, activation analysis, delayed neutron detection, and precise, direct low- level uranium isotopic analysis. Various approaches to decontamination are considered, and the experimental results of several tests presented. (auth)
