PREPARATION OF YTTRIUM FLUORIDE USING FLUORINE

An investigation of the production of YF/sub 3/ using elemental fluorine as the fluorinating agent is discussed. Preparation of YF/sub 3/ by direct fluorination of Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ was found to be a spontaneous exothermic process which ceases short of equilibrium under the conditions studied. Results of thermochemical calculations are included as well as results of fluorination tests. (J.R.D.)
