A method of determining the amount of Cs in surface sea water off the California coast by gamma measurements was developed. The Cs/sup 137/ in a barrel of sea water, brought down by the addition of sodium cobaltinitrite, was collected as a precipitate having a volume of abcut 250 ml. This wet material placed near a 3 in. diameter NaI crystal gave an accurate and reproducible measure of the Cs content. A 256-channel gamma spectrometer and a digital computer accessory for storing information were used in the study. Results of twenty preliminary assays made on 200 liter sea water samples taken just beyond the surf zone are given. (M.C.G.)
