A method of preparing U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ is described. It consists of the purification of uranyl nitrate hexahydrate, its conversion with formic acid into uranyl formate, and the ignition of this substance. The U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ so formed has a packing density as high as that made by dried ignition of the nitrate. It is spectrographically pure and it requires very little grinding. (auth)
