A method is described for the preparation of U[sub 3]O[sub 8] nuclear fuel material by direct precipitation of uranyl formate monohydrate from uranyl nitrate solution. The uranyl formate monohydrate precipitate is removed, dried and calcined to produce U[sub 3]O[sub 8] having a controlled particle size distribution. 1 fig.
