DEVELOPMENT OF ULTRASONIC UNBOND TEST

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4179514
An ultrasonic method of detecting voids and unbonded areas between the can and slug was developed. Tests were run on over 600 slugs for correlation with the frost test, autorddiographs, and destructive tests. Good correlation resulted from these tests with small inconsistency and transient rejections. The addition of a counter to indicate the total unbonded area improved the reliability of the test. The present equipment is shown to be as good as the frost test, though relecting more slugs for many small voids. Improvements in the equipment are now in progress, and a usable production type instrument will Boon be completed. (auth)
