THE DIFFERENTIAL CALORIMETRY OF IRRADIATED UO$sub 2$ AND U$sub 4$$O$$sub 9$

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4178476

A study was made of the release of stored energy from DEC. The ed up to 1.6 x 10/sup 19/ n cm/sup -2/. For UO/sub 2/ specimens no release of energy was detected while for U/sub 4/O/sub 9/ only a relatively small and barely significant release occurred in peaks at 150 and 660 deg C. The two-phase UO/sub 2.08/ specimens, in contrast, save a significant release totaling 2.4 cal gm/sup - 1/ at 340 deg C. It is suggested that this release of energy may be due to the reformation of the U/sub 4/O/sub 9/ phase regions following the displacement, during irradiation, of oxygen atoms into solution in the surrounding UO/sub 2/ matrix.
