ON THE PROPERTIES OF POWDERED AND MASSIVE UO$sub 2$ AND U$sub 4$$O$$sub 9$ (in Japanese)
Samples of ceramic-grade UO/sub 2/ powder (O/U = 2.08) and crushed massive samples (0.325 mesh) of electrodeposited UO/sub 2/(O/U = 2.00/sub 5/), fused UO/sub 2/(O/U = 2.00/sub 3/), and electrodeposited U/sub 4/O/sub 9/-x(O/U = 2.10) were used to study oxidation behavior and crystal structure. Results of x- ray analysis and infrared spectrophotometry of heated samples, DTA curves, and the relationship between heating temperature and the O/U ratio of the samples are presented. The oxidation behavior of the samples were found to be substantially the same: UO/sub 2/(cubic) or U/sub 4/O/sub 9/-x(cubic) 200 to 400 deg C yields U/sub 3/O/sub 7/(tetragonal) 340 to 425 deg C yields U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ (orthorhombic). Differences in the crystal transformation temperature of individual samples may be due to particle size and surface activity. Using infrared spectrophotometry, a small absorption at 15.3 mu was recognized, which might be caused by the U/sub 3/O/sub 7/ phase. The electrodeposited U/sub 4/O/sub 9/-x single crystal was diamond shaped and very thin, quite different from the octahedron shape of electrodeposited UO/sub 2/. The regular triangular etch pits on the diamond-shaped face of the U/sub 4/O/sub 9/-x crystal show that this face is identical with the (111) face of the UO/sub 2/ crystal. (from NSA of Japan)
