THE VALENCY OF $sup 208$Tl FORMED BY ALPHA-DECAY IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.

The possibility of oxidation by the recoil energy of alpha decay was investigated by studying the form of Tl/sup 208/ in the alpha decay prcducts of Bi/sup 212/ in solution. Tl/sup +/ is isoelectronic with Bi/sup 3+/ which is probably the major species of Bi present in solution, and hence Tl/sup 3+/ would form from the loss of two electrons from the decay product of Bi/sup 212/. The solution was prepared from the radioactive deposit of a radiothorium preparation, Tl/sup +/ and Tl/sup 3+/ added, and the radioactivity collected by each species was measured with two methcds, one by extraction of Tl/sup 3+/ and the other by precipitation of Tl/sup +/ as TlBr and Tl/sup 3+/ as Tl(OH)/sub 3/. It was found that about 1/3 of the radioactivity was collected in the Tl/sup 3+/ fraction, although the exact proportion depended somewhat on the initial Tl/sup +/ and Tl/ sup 3+/ concentrations.
