TANGENTIAL IRRADIATION OF THE BREAST. II. INFLUENCE OF THE CONFIGURATION OF THE BREAST ON THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE DOSE (in German)

The influence of the breast configuration on tangential pendulum irradiation of a preoperative breast carcinoma is discussed. It is pointed out that the bigger the breast, the more difficult it is to get a homogenous load to the thoracic wall and that it is advisable in the presence of a big breast to utilize the composed pendulum irradiation. Useful isodoses are achieved by keeping the fields narrow, but in this case longer periods of irradiation have to be accepted. The calculation of isodoses is very time consuming, as in the 200 kv irradiation the scattering and varying absorption by the ribs are difficult to estimate. Focusing is controlled by x-ray pictures taken with the therapy apparatus at different spots of the course of motion. By measuring the surface doses in every patient and comparing it with isodoses taken on phantoms of different configurations, reliable evidence on the isodoses can be obtained in each case. (auth)
