THE SEPARATION OF HYDROGEN ISOTOPES BY SORPTION IN PALLADIUM

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4176434

The separation of hydrogen and deuterium by use of palladium bods at room temperature was shown to be possible. The separation takes advantage of the differences in equilibrium concentrations and in the rates of sorption between the isotopes. The separation factors obtained using two palladium beds in series were between 4 and 5. This is in good agreement with theory. A scheme for hydrogen isotope separations by use of a countercurrent palladium bod is outlined. (auth)
