THE EFFECT OF $gamma$-RAYS ON EMBRYONIC ERYTHROPOIESIS (in Russian)

The influence of gamma rays on embryonic erythropoiesis was studied in the eggs of white leghorn chickens irradiated by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays to doses of 1000 to 1300 r at 1.2 to 1.45 r/min after 5 to 8 days of incubation. The cells per mm/sup 2/ of blood and relative and absolute numbers of cells of megalo- and normoblastic series indicate that megaloblast erythropoiesis begins in certain small blood areas of the extraembnyonic mesenchyme following one day of incubation. This is followed by bleeding in the capillaries of the yoke-bag wall. The data show that the megaloblastic reaction after 5 days of incubation is less expressed than after 8 days. The number of megaloblastic erythropoiesis cells in peripheral blood was determined by the intensity of cell production and destruction. Embryonic blood megalocytes suffer strong structural changes after 5 days of exposure (nuclear fragmentation. irregular amitosis. pathological mitosis. etc.). The cariolysis and picnose destroy some of the cells and the number of megocytes is reduced. Later the destruction processes slow down and megaloblastic erythopoiesis continues. A return to the original ontogenetic bleeding after 8 days of exposure and arrested megaloblastic erythropotesis were observed in a second set of tests. (R.V.J.)
