RADIOSTRONTIUM AND RADIOCAESIUM IN DRINKING WATER IN THE UNITED KINGDOM. Results up to Mid 1959

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4173424

The determination of Sr/sup 89/, Sr/sup 90/, and Cs/sup 137/ in samples of drinking water from a number of supply undertakings in the United Kingdom has continued. In the first six months of 1959 the concentration of Sr/ sup 90/ in supplies derived from rivers and lakes was in the region of 0.5 mu mu c/1 and 1 mu mu c/1, respectively. The concentration of both Sr/sup 90/ and Cs/sup 137/ in these surface water supplies has approximately doubled compared with the corresponding period in 1958. The activity of well water remains very low. Until the Sr and Cs concentration in food during 1959 has been published, no estimate of the relative significance to the population of these increases can be made. (auth)
