Partial gamma ray widths for low lying levels in aluminium and magnesium

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics
The gamma rays resulting from the bombardment of Al and Mg with protons of 3.3 to 4.2 Mev energy were used to excite low lying levels in Al/sup 27/, Mg/sup 24/, and Mg/sup 25/. Combining the results of self absorption and resonance scattering studies with measured branching ratios, the following partial widths GAMMA /sub 0/ for the ground state transitions were obtained: (1.01 Mev, 3/2/sup +/) level in Al/sup 27/, GAMMA /sub 0/ = 0.98 GAMMA = 3.9 plus or minus 1.6 x 10/sup -4/ ev; 2.21 Mev level in Al/sup 27/, GAMMA /sub 0/ = 0.98 GAMMA = (g/su b 1//g/sub 2/) 2.4 plus or minus 0.3 x 10/sup -2/ ev; (1.37 Mev, 2+) level in Mg/sup 24/, GAMMA /sub 0/ = GAMMA =4.2 plus or minus 1.5 x 10/sup -4/ ev; (1.61 Mev, 7/2/sup +/) level in Mg/sup 25/, G/sub 0/ = GAMMA = 3.0 plus or minus 1.5 x 10/sup -2/ ev. The angular distribution of the 1.01-Mev resonance radiation was found to be of the form W( theta ) = 1 + (0.02 plus or minus 0.l3)P/sub 2/(cos theta ), that of the 2.21-Mev radiation W( theta ) = 1 + (0.23 plus or minus 0.03)P/sub 2/(cos theta ).
