Stress corrosion cracking in quenched and underaged U-6 wt.% Nb
Two types of stress corrosion cracking occur in U-6 wt% Nb. Intergranular (anodic dissolution) cracking occurs in aqueous Cl{sup -} environments. Transgranular (oxide stress rupture) cracking occurs in gaseous environments containing oxygen. Aging the quenched alloy at 200 deg C for 2 hours doubles the yield strength but only slightly lowers the stress corrosion cracking threshold. (auth)
