APPLICATION OF ZIRCONIUM AND ITS COMPOUNDS IN THE MAKING OF HARD AND REFRACTORY ALLOYS
A review is presented on the characteristics and applications of Zr compounds with C, B, N, and Si for hard, high melting point products with elevated high-temperature strength, high E, chemical inertness to both acids and alkalies, refractoriness in contact with molten metals, and high electric and thermal conductivity. The preparation of technical ZrC by carbon-black carbidization (ZrO/sub 2/ + 3C = ZrC + 2CO), that of pure ZrB/sub 2/ by borocarbide reduction of ZrO/sub 2/ (2ZrO/sub 2/ + B/sub 4/C= 2ZrB/sub 2/ + 4CO), that of pure ZrN by nitriding of metallic Zr powder at 1200 deg C, and that of ZrSi/sub 2/ by pressing Zr and Si powders in stoichiometric ratio and sintering at 1200 deg C in an Ar or H atmosphere are described in detail. Methods developed for hot pressing (simultaneous pressing and sintering) and by extrusion of mixtuxes of the powders with plastifiers (socalled friction-force pressing and sintering) are mentioned. A technology for the manufacture of ZrB/sub 2/ immersion thermocouples for use in steel, pig-iron, brass, and bronze melts is described, along with the high-temperature performance and thermal inertia of such thermocouples in steel-furnace tests.
