The filtration properties of Czechoslovak analytic filters are reported. Altogether 15 different kinds were examined, some of which were equal in quality to similar filters of foreign make. The staining properties of filters made of organic fibers, their clogging by industrial aerosols, and their applicability for determining the concentration of radioactive aerosols are considered. Filters made of chlorinated, cold-pressed polyvinylchloride proved best. These filters have a very low resistance to flow, are sufficiently strong, and are able to retain large quantities of samples (tenths of mg). Their efficiency is also satisfactory (>95% with particles of 0.1 mu at 10 cm/sec gas velocity). These filters proved very efficient for retaining radioactive aerosols, because they allow large quantities of alr to be sucked through and radioactive particles penetrate the filter only insignificantly. However, they cannot be made as transparent as diaphragm filters and are therefore less suitable for determining the numerical quantity of aerosol concentrations, but they can be easily dissolved in organic solvents.
