THE PRODUCTION AND DETECTION OF FREE RADICALS BY CHEMICAL AND SPECTROGRAPHIC METHODS. Final Report, October 29, 1960-OCTOBER 28, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4169948
Compounds with structures similar to those present in proteins were brought into reaction with radical-producing reagents to form intermediate free radicals. The structures and behavior of these intermediate free radicals were studied. The existence of a sulfonium radical intermediate was investigated and evidence to support the formation of this radical, as a transient intermediate in some free radical reactions with phenyl sulfide, was found. The thermal decomposition of tert-butyl peroxide in the presence of N-methyl pyrrole gave two isomeric products. Study of the tert-butyl peroxide-initiated free radical reactions of cyclohexane oxide and propylene sulfide resulted in the discovery of a type of radical abstraction and rearrangement not previously described. Thermal-decomposition products of peroxyesters were studied for identification of free radicals. One hundred and twenty-eight references are included. (M.C.G.)
