In the design and calculation for the shielding of a nuclear reactor, one encounters problems of a practical and theoretical nature. As in most practical cases one has to deal with shielding,:gainst both gamma rays and neutrons; this subject is discussed in detail first. It is followed by a survey of results attained in recent years. The article ends with a description of radiation detection instruments for shielding research. (auth)
