0+ LEVELS OF EVEN NUCLEI IN THE RARE-EARTH REGION
The beta type quadrupole vibrations of deformed nuclei have been found in only a few cases in the heavy element region. A search was started in order to find such levels in the rare-earth region. A 0/sup +/ beta type level at 685.0 kev was found in the deformed nucleus Sm/sup 52/ by measuring conversion coefficients. Its corresponding 0/sup +/ two-Moron type level was observed in Gd/ sup 152/ at 615.3 bew. The strongly deformed nucleus Er/sup 166/ has a 0/sup +/ level at 1460.4 Kev row confirmed by angular correlation measurements. The 1087 kev level in Os/sup 188/ and the 1267 kev level in the sphenical nucleus Pt/sup 194/ were measured by singular correlation to have zero spins, indicating the same trend of the 0/sup +/ levels as theoretically efficted. (A second encited 0/ sup +/ level was found in Os/sup 188/ at 1766 kev and in Pt/sup 194 at 1480 kev.) When the beta and gamma vibrational hands are known, the theoretical and experimental rotationalvibrational coeffcients can be compared: B/sup theory/ = KB/sup exP/. A K-value of 2 to 4 is found, indicating a weeker coupling than that theoretically expected. The experimental trend of levels in even nuclei with A = 50 to 250 is discussed, and some new spin assignments are proposed. (auth)
