TOTAL ABSORPTION RATE OF MUONS IN CARBON
Journal Article

The absorption rate was studied for muons in carbon with a 30-in. propane bubble chamber. The muon beam had a 1% pion background. Of the 2519 particles stopping in the chamber, 2334 decayed and 185 interacted. The pion contamination was estimated from prong distributions of pion and muon capture stars. It is expected that approximately 18% of muon captures lead to a formation of B/sup 12/, which beta decays to C/sup 12/. If a decay lifetime of 2.22x 10/sup -6/ sec is assumed, the estimate of the total capture rate becomes LAMBDA /sub 1/ = (0.36 plus or minus 0.04) x 10/sup 5/ sec/sup -1/ (B.O.G.)
