The action of streptomycin and other antibiotics and chemotherapeutic preparations on the survival and autoinfection processes of irradiated mice was studied. Streptomycin proved to be most effective in a small range of doses and early terms of its employment. In streptomycin therapy a decrease of the level of bacteriemia and septicemia occurred in the irradiated animals, resulting in 85% survival of previously doomed animals. The causes hindering the effectiveness of antibiotic therapy of radiation autoinfection are: altered nature of bacterial flora in mice under the influence of treatment, the presence and more rapid development of resistant forms of bacteria in the irradiated organism, death of animals due to nonbacterial causes, with a particularly large number thereof in high doses of ionizing radiation. A combination of streptomycin with cortisone yielded promising results in the treatment of radiation sickness. (auth)
