THE SPECTROGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF URANIUM AND URANIUM COMPOUNDS BY THE CARRIER DISTILLATION TECHNIQUE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4164149

A sample in the form of black uranium oxide is mixed with a carrier, placed in a cupped graphite electrode, and the spectra of the impurity lines excited in a d-c arc at 10 or 12 amp aligned with a spectrograph of large dispersion. Sample spectra are compared visually with standard spectra. Calibration is effected by the inclusion of a standard on the sample plate as density monitor. The method is applicable to refractory oxides for the determination of impurities in the range from 0.1 ppm to 500 ppm. Tables are given showing the sensitive lines and limits of detection for the following elements: Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Ge, In, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Pd, Rb, Sb, Sn, Sr, Ti, Tl, V, W, Zn. This method is semiquantitative. Duplicates should agree to within plus or minus 20% and the mean of duplicates should be within a factor of 0.7 to 1.5 of the true content. (auth)
