SPECIES COMPOSITION AND DISTRIBUTION OF MARINE NEKTON IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN OFF OREGON. Final Progress Report, September 1, 1961 through September 1, 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4163606
Studies were made over a 2-yr period of the distribution, ecology, and radioactivity of oceanic nekton and macroplankton in the Pacific Ocean off the Oregon coast. The role of fishes, squids, shrimps, euphausiids, and other swimming animals in the accumulation andd biological transport of nuclides in ocean waters was investigated. Data are included on the species composition of oceanic marine nekton and macroplakton; the distribution of animals in regard to spatio-temporal differences related to depth and diurnal vertical migration, distance from shore, latitude, and seasons of the year; and the collection and identification of oceanic animals for andalysis for radioisotopes formed by neutron activation at the Hanford reac tors and passed to the ocean by waters of the Columbia sup 65/, Cr/sup 51/, Ce/sup 141/, Ru/sup 103/, ls from various ocean depths and in relation to the Columbia River plume and seasons was determined. Sampling and analytical methods are described. (C.H.)
