Determination of Chloride by Cathodic Stripping Polarography. Application to Solutions of Uranyl Sulfate
Cathodic stripping polarography is useful for the determination of low concentrations of chloride in aqueous solutions of uranyl sulfate. Chloride in the concentration range of 0.2 to 2 mu g per ml is deposited as insoluble mercurous chloride on a mercury-pool microelectrode at a potential of +0.4 volt vs. S.C.E. for 15 minutes with stirring. The deposit is then stripped from the electrode by scanning the potential to less positive values. The peak height of the recorded current-voltage curve is measured and related to the chloride concentration through a calibration curve. The coefficient of variation is about 5%. Finally, this technique is significantly more sensitive than conventional polarographic methods.
