RADIATION-INDUCED BONE TUMORS AFTER THORIUM-X TREATMENT (in German)

Journal Article · · Monatsschr. Kinderheilk.
OSTI ID:4161963
Fifty three patients treated with 2500 to 14000 units of Th-- X during childhood showed injuries to the long bones. Of another group of 53 patients who had been treated with Th--X, 19 have either died or suffer from induced bone tumors. Almost all of the tumors are osteogenic sarcomas localized in the region of the metaphyses of the long bones. Some have been observed in the pelvis, ribs, and diaphyses of the long bones, but osteogenic sarcomas are seldom observed in the ankle or wrist bones. Occurrence of a second osteogenic sarcoma in the same patient after a period of time is probably not the result of a metastasis, but is more likely a second primary sarcoma. In each of four patients who had previously received Th-X treatment an unusual number of osteogenic sarcomas induced by radiation have been detected. (BBB)
