The photolysis of ethyl propionate was reinvestigated. The reactions of ethoxy radicals, produced in the primary process, were studied in detail. Information regarding these reactions was obtained: (1) C/sub 2/H/sub 5/O + C/sub 2/H/sub 5/ yields /H/sub 5/, (2) C/sub 2/H/sub 5/O + C/sub 2/H/sub 5/ yields C/ sub 2/H/sub 6/ + CH/su b 3/CHO, (3) C/sub 2/H/sub 5/O + ub 4/ + C/sub 2/H/sub 5/ OH, (4) C/sub 2/H/sub 5/O yields CH/sub 3/ + CH/sub 2/O, an d (5) C/sub 2/H/sub 5/O + C/sub 2/H/sub 5/COOC/sub 2/H/sub 5/ yields C/sub 2/H/sub 5/OH + R. At 29 deg C, k/sub 2/k//sub 1/ = 1.3 plus or minus 0.2 and k/sub 3//k/sub 1/ = 2.3 plus or minus 0.3 indicating that disproportionation reactions between ethoxy and ethyl radicals are more important than their recombination reactions. Activation energies of 13 and 5.5 kcal were obtained for reactions 4 and 5, respectively. (auth)
