LOW TEMPERATURE CONVERSION OF URANIUM DIOXIDE TO URANIUM TETRAFLUORIDE USING AQUEOUS HYDROGEN FLUORIDE

Over 90% conversion of Mallinokrodt or Hanford uranium dioxide to uranium tetrafluoride was obtained with a stoichiometric excess of hydrogen fluoride. A product suitable for fluorination in the K-25 feed plant was made from this hydrated uranium tetrafluoride by drying at approximately 400 deg C in an atmosphere of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride.
