A method is given for converting uraninm metal turnings directly into uranium tetrafluoride. It consists of cleaning uranium metal turnings, treating the cleaned turnings with a stream of anhydrous hydrogen-free hydrogen fluoride for from 2 to 4 hr at a temperature of between 400 and 600 deg C, raising the temperature by at least 200 deg C while continuing the hydrogen fluoride treatment, and maintaining the increased temperature treatment for at least 1/2 hr.
