CATHODIC PROCESSES IN THE DEPOSITION OF ZIRCONIUM FROM CHLORIDE MELTS

The polarization of a molybdenum cathode in a molten equimolal mixture of sodium and potassium chlorides containing from 0.65 to 4.0 mole% ZrCl/sub 2/ and from 0.7 to 5.3 mole% ZrCl/sub 4/ was investigated over the range of current densities from 10/sup -4/ to 10 amp/cm/sup 2/ and temperatures from 700 to 900 deg . It was found that deposition of metallic zirconium on the cathode is preceded by change in the zirconium ion charge from Zr/sup 4+/ to Zr/sup 2+/. The residual recharging currents attain a magnitude of 0.1-0.2 amp/ cm/sup 2/ for tetrachloride concentrations in the electrolyte of 16% by weight. Deposition of metallic zirconium from dichloride baths is shown to occur as the result of direct discharge of Zr/sup 2+/ ions to the metal. The deposition potential of zirconium is by 1.1--1.2 v higher than that of the alkali metals. (auth)
