PRTR PRIMARY PUMP FLYWHEEL ANALYSIS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4159324
The ability of a prototype PRTR primary pump equipped with a flywheel (1185 lb-ft/sup 2/ moment of inertia) to maintain adequate coolant flow, in a total electric power failure, until natural convection flow became sufficient was investigated. Experiments showed that the flywheel decay times varied from one to three minutes; and analytical study showed that mechanical friction in the pump seals can produce the variation. In all instances, the flywheel maintained adequate flow until after convective flow would have started (D.C.W.)
