Emission spectra of the decay products of HCN molecules excited by slow electrons were obtained in the 280--700-nm region at a pressure of 4.5times10$sup -4$ Torr. Absolute magnitudes of the effective excitation cross sections were determined for seven bands of the violet system (B$sup 2$$Sigma$$sup +$$Yields$$X$$sup 2$$Sigma$$sup +$) and six bands of the red system (A$sup 2$Pi$Yields$$X$$sup 2$$Sigma$$sup +$) of the CN radical, and for two CN$sup +$ bands (c'$Sigma$$Yields$a'$Sigma$). The absolute cross sections for excitation of these bands have values between 0.1times10$sup -18$ cm$sup 2$ and 32.8times10$sup -18$ cm$sup 2$ at the maxima.
