Autopspy findings in the cases of leukemia, aplastic anemia, and carcinoma treated by irradiation and homologous bone marrow infusion are reported. Patients with leukemia and circinomi were treated with Co/sup 60/ irradiation or cytostatic chemotherapy prior to the bone marrow, infusion. Two cases of acute leukemia showed prominent decrease at autopsy in intensity of the leukemic infiltration in bone marrow, spleen, liver, lymph nodes, and organs. It seemed likely that the preliminary treatment induced a remission in leukemia; however, evidence of active hematopoiesis confirming a successful transplantation was not attained. In the one case of pulmonary cancer, the intensively irraidiated sternal marrow was completely acellular. On the other hand, bone marrow of the lumbar vertebrae was only slightly hypocellular, showing almost normal hematopoiesis. The lumbar marrow was not as severely injured by radiation as sternal marrow. The bone marrow in a case of gastric cancer was extensively destroyed by an osteoplastic metastases. The spleen was also almost completely destroyed by a metastasis and anemic infarction but evidence suggesting proliferation of the infused cells was not found. Megakaryocytes were also demonstrable without association of hematopoietic cells in the capillaries of lung, sinusoids of liver, spleen, and lymph nodes only in cases which died within a short time after the last marrow infusion. Definite extramedullary hematopoiesis was not observed in any case, nor was pulmonary infarction, as a result of bone marrow infusion, detected in any case. (BBB)
