(d,p) AND (d,t) REACTIONS ON MAGNESIUM ISOTOPES

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Natural and enriched magnesium targets were bombarded with 14.8-Mev deuterons from the University of Pittsburgh cyclotron. The reaction products were magnetically analyzed and detected in a scintillation counter. Angular distributions from 10 to 60 deg (in some cases to 90 deg ) were obtained for most of the following reactions: :(Mg/sup 24/(d,p) to the els of Mg/sup 24/, and Mg/sup 26/(d,t) to the 0-, 0.58-, 0.98-, 1.61-, Mg/sup 25/. The level at 7.60 Mev in Mg/sup 24/ has not been reported before. The observed angular distributions are compared to stripping theory, and l values and absolute reduced widths are extracted. An anomaly in the angular distribution was found for the transitions between the Mg/sup 24/ and Mg/sup 25/ ground states and was studied as a function of incident deuteron energy. The reduced widths obtained are compured to the predictions of the rotational model, and, in general, good agreement is found; however, an admixture (of approx equal 15%) of higher rotational bands was found in the Mg/sup 26/ ground-state wave function.
