(d,t) Reaction in Light Nuclei; REAKTSIYA (d,t) NA LEGKIKH YADRAKH

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4050488

The (d,t) reactions on 12 targets (/sup 6/Li, /sup 7/Li, /sup 9/Be, /sup 11/B, /sup 12/C /sup 16/O, /sup 18/O, /sup 19/F, /sup 24/Mg, /sup 25/Mg, /sup 26/ Mg, and /sup 26/Al) were investigated by measuring the triton spectra for a wide range of energies (0.12 to 15 Mev) and angular intervals. The main feature of the method was the measurement of tritons in the complete absence of background. The measurements showed that the (d,t) reaction is quite similar to the (p,d) reaction, and in all cases the triton angular distribution (primary maximum) was well described by Battler theory. The distribution of excited levels in residual nuclei showed the distinct regularity anticipated for capture reactions. Probabilities for lower levels with structures close to the ground-state structure were high; probabilities for levels with energies above approximates 5 Mev were considerably smaller. The capture reaction differs from the stripping reaction in which intense excitation of high single-particle states occurs. Correlations of (d,t) and (p,d) reactions were used in an investigation of nuclear structure, and it was found that widths from (d,t) reactions can be used in nuclear spectrometry just as in (p,d) reactions. Widths for 1p shells were compared with shell models with intermediate bonding. Width measurements on the 2s--1d shell (/sup 18/O and /sup 19/F) indicated many configurations. According to theory the 2s/sub 1/2/ and 1d/sup 5/2/ shells are strongly mixed. The results for /sup 25/Mg and /sup 26/Mg indicate a rotational structure and rotation bond mixing. Neutron capture from saturated shells (1s/sub 1/2/ on /sup 9/Be, 1p on / sup 18/O and /sup 19/F) was observed. The vacancy level for /sup 9/Be was found at approximates 17 mev and for /sup 17/O and /sup 18/F at 3 Mev. It was also found that for 20-Mev deuterons the total triton cross sections can reach large magnitudes ( approximates 350 mb for Li isotopes). (R.V.J.)
