PROCESS FOR SEPARATING SAMARIUM, EUROPIUM AND YTTERBIUM FROM OTHER RARE EARTHS
A method is proposed for separating one or more of the elements, Sm, Eu, and Yb, from the other members of the group of rare earths with which they are associated. The Sm, Eu, and Yb present in a mixture can be reduced from the trivalent to the divalent state by known means. The mixture is then introduced into an ammonia solution wherein divalent rare earth compounds dissolve and can be separated from trivalent rare earths which form insoluble hydroxides. In another method SO/sub 4/ ions are added to the ammoniacal solution containing divalent and trivalent rare earth compounds to produce a precipitate containing insoluble sulfates of the divalent rare earths and insoluble hydroxides of the trivalent rare earths. When the solution is acidified slightly, the hydroxides dissolve and the insoluble sulfates can be separated. (A.G.W.)
