SELF-CONSISTENT DETERMINATION OF THE NUCLEON MASS AND RELATED QUANTITIES

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:4156565
It has been suggested that all the observable properties of strongly interacting systems can be determined selfconsistently, if there do not exist any elementary particles in the conventional sense. This conjecture is applied to the nucleon mass and the pion-nucleon coupling constant, which are calculated under the assumption that the nucleon is composite, and that its existence is a consequence of the same forces that produce the pion-nucleon resonances. A self- consistent calculation is possible because the nucleon and the 3-3 resonance are principally responsible for the forces that produce each other, providing an example of a bootstrap'' or self-supporting mechanism. The N/D method is used for computations. The introduction of a cutoff is unavoidable, so that there is some ambiguity in the quantitative results; but a large range of cutoff values predicts the same orders of magnitude as are observed experimeiitally. It is shown qualitatively that the selfconsistent method not only predicts the nucleon and the 3-3 resonance, but excludes many other combinations that are not observed. Finally the method is extended to the determination of the properties of the SIGMA and the K/sup */. (Dissertation Abstr.)
