EFFECTS OF IRRADIATION ON THE CALCIFYING MECHANISM OF EPIPHYSEAL CARTILAGE. Period Covered: May 16, 1959-May 15, 1960
Progress is reported in studies on the effects of irradiation on the calcifying mechanism of epiphyseal cartilage. A correlative study was made of irradiation effects on slices of rachitic epiphyseal cartilage in vitro on their calcificability and stainability with toluidine blue. Data are presented from morphological observations on samples exposed to x radiation of 250,000, 500,000, and 1,000,000 r. Mitosis stopped within 2-to 4 days in the tibial epiphysis of normal young rats exposed to 4,000 r x radiation. Observations are reported up to 44 days post-irradiation. Growth curves of the increase in length of the bones after irradiation and of the weights of the animals are included. (C.H.)
