Previously (Naturwissenschaften 47, 87(1960)) it was reponted that the lethal effects of x radiation were prevented by sodium selenate. It was later determined that the selenate contained aelenite with a selenite decomposition product. The effects of combined intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections of selenate with 1.28% selenite on the x-ray-induced lethality in rats were studied. The selenate was dissolved in NaCI and then sterilized. All the rats receiving up to 4.6 mg/kg of the solution survived. All animals receiving pure selenate died, as did those that received the selenate-selenite solution that had been . sterilized for too long a period. (J.S.R.)
