Protective relaying for the cogeneration intertie revisited

  1. Basler Electric Co., Highland, IL (United States)
The term cogeneration literally means the simultaneous generation of electricity with another useful form of energy from the same fuel. In today`s usage, the term cogeneration has been used to include just about any form of privately owned generation which can be connected to the utility grid. The intertie or interconnection provides the path for power flow between the utility and the Independent Power Producer (IPP). The interconnection may comprise one or more circuits and usually includes voltage transformation. Protective relaying is only one small part of the IPP-utility interconnection. It is often the least understood and can be a major source of frustration among the IPP owner, the consultant, and the utility, due to each person`s different perspective.
