The economics of small cogeneration is such that once the desired level of protection is defined, the costs to protect the interconnection do not vary with generation capacity. It is reported that utility relays affording a high level of protection will represent more than 25% of the cost of the major power system capital equipment at 800 kW and nearly 50% at 100 kW. In this paper, multifunction protective relay is explained. It considers the method used to decide which functions to include, the reasoning behind this decision, and the general operation of the various functions. It describes the approaches taken by the design engineers to create a relay that most efficiently provides the specified functions.
