DETERMINATION OF THE RELATIVE *cap sigma/-*cap lambda/ PARITY AND OF THE RATIO OF ASYMMETRY COEFFICIENTS *cap alpha/*SUB cap lambda/ TO *cap alpha/*SUB 0/IN HYPERON DECAY FROM THE PION-HYPERON RESONANCE
Experiments are proposed for the determination of the relative SIGMA - LAMBDA parity and the ratio of asymmetry coefficients alpha /sub LAMBDA /(in LAMBDA yields p+ pi /sup -/) to alpha /sub omicron /(in SIGMA /sup +/ yields p + pi /sup easuring only up/down asymmetries. The proposals depend on the following assumptions: (1) the isobar Y* is a "good" resonance, meaning that it is reasonably narrow and pronounced so that experimental conditions can be chosen under which the resonant process dominates; and (2) in the "decay" of Y* the branching ratio (b)/(a) = (c)/(a) is not too small. Preliminary experiments seem to indicate that these assumptions are reasonable. Whatever the situation turns out to be the experimental investigation of the considered reaction will give useful information on the position, width, and spin of the resonance, and can shed light on the understanding of strange particle interactions.
