Title: NEUTRON CROSS SECTION EVALUATION GROUP NEWSLETTER NO. 1, JUNE 1960

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4154978

The discrepaacy in the Be/sup 9/(n,2n) cross section as measured by Fischer and Levin & Cranbeng was partially resolved in the 2.6- to 4.1-Mev region by new measurements of the nonelastic neutron scattering. The cross section for differential elastic neutron scattering for Be/sup 9/ was determined at 2.6 to 6.0 Mev, together with that for Be/sup 9/(n,4aa) at 3.9 to 8.6 Mev. B/sup 10/ was determined to be present in natural B to the extent of 19.8 plus or minus 0.1%, and the cross sections for B/sup 10/(n,4aa) and natural B (absorption) were found to be 3840 plus or minus 10 and 762 plus or minus 3 barns, respectively. The cross sections for B/sup 10/(n, alpha ) and B/sup 10/(n,2 alpha ) were determined in the Mev range. Cross sections are reported for O/sup 16/(n, alpha ) at 5 to 7.34 Mev, O/sup 16/ differential elastic neutron scattering at 3.0 and 6.0 Mev, Ar/sup 36/(n, alpha ) at 1.3 to 5.5 Mev, and Ar/sup 40/(n, alpha ) at 5.75 to 8.94 Mev. Neutron capture cross sections in the kev energy range are reported for Nb, Mo, Rb, Pd, Ag, Cd, In, Sn, W, Pt, and Au. Thermal neutron total cross sections at 0.02 to 0.20 ev are reported for U/sup 233/, U/sup 235/, Pu/sup 240/, U/sup 234/, and I/sup 129/, wi th the results for 0.02 to 0.04 ev being given at 2200 m/sec. Neutron multiplication data are given for U/sup 233/ and Pu/sup 239/. (D.L.C.)
