EXCITATION OF NUCLEAR LEVELS IN Mg$sup 24$, Al$sup 27$, AND C$sup 12$ THROUGH INELASTIC SCATTERING OF ALPHA PARTICLES

Elastic and inelastic scattering of 42-Mev alpha particles by Mg/sup 24/, Al/sup 27/, and C/sup 12/ was studied using a single diffusedsilicon solid- state detector. Angular distributions were obtained for 9 final states in Mg/sup 24/, 15 in Al/sup 27/, and 4 in C/sup 12/. The presence of 2 new levels at about 7 Mev in Ai/sup 27/ is disclosed. Interaction radii, collective matrix elements, parity changes, and angular momentum transfers were evaluated in terms of the inelastic diffraction theory. The inelastic scattering to the levels in Mg/sup 24/ at 6.0 Mev and 6.43 Mev, usually designated as 2-phonon states, exhibited single rather than double excitation features. The presence of 2 strongly excited octupole levels at about 8 Mev in Mg/sup 24/ is suggested by the experiments. In Al/sup 27/, quadrupole and octupole excitations, each spread out over several levels, were observed. The experiments suggest that an intermediate rather than an extreme coupling approximation would be more appropriate for the study of the Al/sup 27/ nucleus. In C/sup 12/, certain anomalous'' deviations from the inelastic diffraction predictions are observed, but the agreement with the model is good in general. The 3-assignment for the 9.63Mev level is strongly supported by the present results. (Dissertation Abstr.)
