CHEMICAL PROCESSING REQUIREMENTS FOR TRANSURANIUM ELEMENT PRODUCTION

Journal Article · · Nuclear Science and Engineering (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4153663
Transuranium elements will be produced by long-term neutron irradiation of Pu-Al alloy to produce Pu/sup 242/, Am/sup 243/, and Cm /sup 244/, which will be irradiated in the High Flux Isotope Reactor to produce berkelium, californium, einsteinium, and fermium. Methods based primarily on ion exchange and solvent extraction sre outlined for processing both irradiated Pu-Al alloy and irradiated HFIR targets. The calculated content of irradiated Pu/sup 242/ and Cf/sup252/ HFIR targets is given. (auth)
