REACTIVITY OF ORGANISM WITH TOTAL RADIATION OF ANIMALS BY ROENTGEN RAYS (DATA ON STUDY OF CARBOHYDRATE METABOLISM)

Dogs and rabbits were subjected to total x irradiation (600 and 700 to 1000 r, respectively). At various intervals the stages of carbohydrate metabolism were determined. Preliminary injection of insulin sharply increased the radiosensitivity of the animals. All the rabbits died the 2nd or 3rd day after irradiation. In irradiated animals the injection of insulin produced a sharper drop in the sugar level than in the controls. The reaction to insulin was not always accompanied by convulsions, even with a drop in the sugar level to 25 mg%. Injection of small doses of adrenaline into the irradiated animals gave a more pronounced hyperglycemia than was present before irradiation. Plotted sugar curves indicated that the ascent of the sugar level in irradiated animals was not as sharp and rapid as in the nonirradiated but the return of the sugar content to normal occurred sooner.
