The N/sup 15/(p, alpha /sub 0/)C/sup 12/ and the N/sup 11/(p, alpha /sub 1/)C/sup 12* / reactions were studied with a tandem Van de Graaff electrostatic accelerator at proton energies between 3.5 Mev and 12.5 Mev. A gas target of 97.2% enriched N-15 was used. The detectors were phosphorus-diffused junction counters. Angular distributions were measured at 39 different energies for both reactions. The excitation curves for both reactions showed much structure below proton energies of 8 Mev; above this energy, they smoothed out considerably. The excitation energy in the compound nucleus O/sup 16/ ranged from 15.5 Mev to 23 Mev. Many of the peaks in the yield curves agreed with levels in O/sup 16/ found by other reactions. All the angular distributions could be fitted with an expansion in odd and even orders of Legendre polynomials up to P/sub 8/; also, most of the angular distributions below plus or minus Mev could be fitted with orders up to P/sub 4/. This implies a maximum transferred orbital angular momentum value of 2 below 5 Mev, and a maximum value of 4 above plus or minus Mev. Simple arguments lead to the requirement that only T = O levels in O/sup 16/ can feed the exit channels. Isotopic spin was found to be conserved in the reactions. Fits to the N/sup 15/(p, alpha /sub O/)C/sup 12/ reactions with Edwards' version of the plane wave Born approximation with exchange theory were moderately successful for 30 of the 39 angular distributions. Results seem to show that both compound nucleus and direct reaction processes interfere. Considering the amount of structure in the excitation curves, the direct reaction theory was surprisingly successful. (M.P.G.)
